Pi Day – today March 14 (3.14) – is getting its due. 3.14 has long been a day celebrated by mathematicians and others in the STEM fields (ok let’s get real, self-proclaimed geeks and nerds around the globe). More recently, however, it’s become yet another cause for celebration by the masses. And retailers and brand marketers have jumped on the bandwagon, using this ‘special day’ to promote their goods at highly discounted prices in an attempt to drive traffic and sales.
Retail promotions typically feature some sort of ‘pi’: baked pies, pizza pies, pot pies or really anything else that can mimic the shape of a pie. It almost goes without saying that the promotional price du jour is $3.14.
And if great pie at great prices isn’t enough cause for celebration, it’s also Albert Einstein’s birthday (how ironic is that?). So get out, grab some pie and celebrate. After all, St. Patrick’s Day is a whole three days away.

Retailers are taking to social media to promote Pi Day specials.

- Giant Eagle: Dessert pies and pot pies are just $3.14 today
- Whole Foods: Today U.S. stores will have $3.14 off sweet pies & $2.00 off take-n-bake pizzas.
- Sprout’s Farmers Market: Today only (3/14) enjoy freshly baked pies, select varieties, 8’’ at $3.14 each.
- Tate’s Bake Shop: $3.14 off pies until midnight
- Publix: Taking a slightly more humanitarian approach. If it gets 314 retweets (RTs) on Twitter, the retailer will donate 314 pies to a local service organization.
